The Power of Finding Purpose
2 min read · Feb 2, 2025
Over a decade ago, I found myself at a crossroads. After dropping out of high school in 9th grade, I earned my GED through a pseudo-military program, graduating in 2005. I then joined the Army National Guard at 17, thinking my educational journey had come to an end. However, I returned to school in 2013 despite self-doubt and financial constraints. That journey was marked by unwavering perseverance — a quality that ultimately became one of my greatest assets.
When I returned to school in 2013, I was unsure of what to expect. I earned my Associate of Science in General Education — Enterprise Development in 2019. Initially, I pursued a bachelor’s degree in psychology, hoping it would be fulfilling, but I quickly realized it wasn’t the right fit for me. I felt disconnected from the subject and was uncertain about my next step.
Then, I discovered graphic design, and everything changed. This realization was gradual rather than sudden. As I started exploring different subjects, such as photography, I began to understand that graphic design was what I truly loved. When I started my bachelor’s degree in 2021, I finally felt I was on the right path. I learned that finding purpose doesn’t happen overnight; you discover through trial and error. It requires exploration, facing setbacks, and getting back up until you find what genuinely resonates with you.
Finding purpose isn’t solely about making one significant decision; it’s also about the small choices we make every day. These seemingly insignificant decisions are the stepping stones that build momentum. By choosing to show up, continue learning, and celebrate small wins, these moments accumulate over time, leading to a more positive attitude toward life and reducing the negative impact of poor choices.
School became more than just a means to earn a degree — it became proof that I could achieve more. It reshaped my perception of myself and my future.
If you’re feeling stuck, remember: one decision can change everything, and small wins are never insignificant. Every step forward matters.
💬 What’s one small decision that helped shape your success? I’d love to hear your thoughts. Your experiences are meaningful, and sharing them can inspire others on their journey.
Note: I am currently attending school part-time, not full-time. This is why obtaining my Associate’s and Bachelor’s degrees has taken longer.
